Frequently asked questions about the transition

Who is NRMA Insurance?

NRMA Insurance is proudly backed by IAG, Australia and New Zealand’s largest general insurer. NRMA Insurance has been helping Australians protect the things they care about for over 95 years. We have a long, proud history of working with communities to help build resilience against severe weather events, protect what’s precious and keep customers safe.

How is CGU connected to NRMA Insurance?

Both NRMA Insurance and CGU are part of IAG, Australia and New Zealand’s largest general insurer. While CGU’s footprint will continue in Victoria, NRMA Insurance will step in to help CGU customers around Australia continue to protect the things they care about.

Where is NRMA Insurance located?

NRMA Insurance operates in all Australian states except Victoria, with call centres in Adelaide, Perth, Sydney and Brisbane. Both CGU and NRMA Insurance share the same repair network for home and motor claims, so you will continue to receive the same dedication to quality, safe repairs should you need to make a claim.

Will CGU continue to exist?

CGU will continue to provide insurance through our brokers and partners. We’ll also continue to serve customers in Victoria, as well as providing business and farm insurance directly to customers.

What does this change mean for me and my current policy with CGU?

Your current CGU policy will continue as is, with the same product benefits, terms and features, until your next policy renewal.

When will my CGU policy become an NRMA Insurance policy?

If your policy is due to renew on or after 1 July 2024, you’ll receive an invitation to renew with NRMA Insurance. It will explain the renewal process, as well as any changes between your current CGU policy and the new NRMA Insurance policy.

To ensure you make an informed decision, please:

  • Read all documents to ensure that all your details are correct
  • Ensure that you read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and Target Market Determination (TMD), together with your Certificate of Insurance (COI)
  • If you have an agreed value policy, please also check the sums insured on your COI are still appropriate for you
  • Check the excess shown is right for you, as it may have changed
  • Check that any optional benefits listed on your new COI meet your needs.

How can I pay for my policy renewal with NRMA Insurance?

You can pay most policies using PayPal, Google Pay and Apple Pay, as well as BPAY, Visa and Mastercard. You can also visit an NRMA Insurance branch in NSW and the ACT, or pay at any Australia Post Office.

You can also change the way you pay at no extra cost. (Fortnightly, monthly, quarterly or annually.)

How will my payments appear in my banking/financial statements?

From renewal, your payments will automatically start appearing as ‘NRMA Insurance’ on your statement from your financial institution.

Can I make changes to my existing CGU policy?

Yes. You can continue to make changes to your CGU policy. You can do this by visiting www.cgu.com.au or by calling us on 13 24 81.

Can I still make claims on my CGU policy?

Yes. To make a claim, please visit www.cgu.com.au or call 13 24 80. You can make a claim if you held insurance with CGU in accordance with the claims process set out in your PDS.

Who do I talk to if I have any questions about this change?

Who do I call if I have a question regarding my current CGU policy?

Top tips for the transition

Look out for new BPAY codes

If you use BPAY to pay for your policies, you’ll notice that your BPAY reference code will change with each renewal. Make sure you update your reference code with each renewal, along with your internet or phone banking provider.

Check your payment frequency is right for you

You now have the option of fortnightly, monthly or quarterly instalments, as well as a single annual payment. You can change your payment frequency by calling us, logging in online or through our mobile app.

There are new options to pay your policy

You can now pay most policies using PayPal, Google Pay and Apple Pay, as well as BPAY, Visa and Mastercard. You can also visit an NRMA Insurance branch in NSW and the ACT, or pay at any Australia Post Office.

We may need to ask you some additional questions when you renew

Changing to an NRMA Insurance policy may mean asking some additional questions when we renew your policy. We’ll let you know if that’s the case. You can answer those questions either in your new online account, through our mobile app, or over the phone.

Things you should know

  1. Any applicable discounts may be subject to minimum premiums. Discounts only apply until a minimum premium is reached. When we determine your premium on renewal, we may also limit any increases or decreases in your premium by considering factors such as your previous year’s premium amount. You may not save more with more eligible products if a minimum premium is reached, or we have limited increases or decreases in your premium. When we complete the Multi-Product Discount calculation, we will use the policy start date of your policy, not the date that you purchase your policy. As such, policies must be purchased in order of their start date so that the discount can be appropriately applied.

Please consider the Premium Excess and Discount Guide for further information on discounts.

  2. Additional excess amounts may apply to riders who are not listed as riders on your policy, are under 25 or have less than 2 years riding experience. Cover is subject to standard underwriting guidelines and policy terms. For full cover details including limits, conditions and exclusions, please read the Product Disclosure Statement and Policy Booklet.
