Navigating Australian car insurance

Car insurance in Australia may be different to what you’re used to. We’re here to help you understand the different types of cover

Different types of insurance in Australia for you and your car

When choosing insurance, it’s important to understand what is (and isn’t) covered by different policies.

Compulsory Third Party Insurance

Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance covers injuries that are caused in a motor vehicle accident. It is compulsory to drive vehicles on public roads in Australia. Not all states and territories operate the same way. For example, in SA & ACT, CTP insurance (or 'Motor Accident Insurance' in ACT) is paid directly to the road transport authorities at the same time as the registration fee.

In NSW, our Green Slip cover lets you choose to add additional insurance for further protection.

Third Party Property Damage Car Insurance

Third Party Property Damage is a basic level of car insurance that covers damage that you cause to someone else’s property like their car, fence or garage1.

Third Party Fire & Theft Car Insurance

Third Party Fire & Theft covers damage you cause to someone else’s property plus damage to your car if it's stolen or damaged by fire1.

Comprehensive Car Insurance

Comprehensive provides cover for your car for accidental damage, collision or crash, severe weather, theft, vandalism or malicious acts2. Plus, we cover the extras on your car like alloy wheels, roof racks and custom sound systems3.

Comprehensive Plus Car Insurance

Comprehensive Plus is our highest level of cover and gives you all the protection of our Comprehensive Car Insurance with additional benefits such as excess-free windscreen, sunroof and glass cover1.

Roadside assistance

Millions of Aussies count on NRMA* roadside assistance for help with breakdowns, flat tyres, batteries and empty fuel tanks. Roadside assistance is available 24 hours a day, every day, Australia-wide, and there’s no limit to how many times you can call for help with NRMA.*
