This policy is our entry-level comprehensive cover option. It’s got the basic cover you look for in a comprehensive policy, like car damage caused by a collision, fire, theft, and bad weather. Accidents happen, so with this policy, you’ll also be covered for damage your car causes to other people’s vehicles and property.
The reason this is our entry level option is because with this policy, you can’t add any optional extras. So, if you’re after inclusions like a hire car or $0 glass excess, you might like to explore our Comprehensive and Comprehensive Plus policies instead.
This is just a summary of the differences between NRMA car insurance levels of cover. Check our Product Disclosure Statement for specific terms, conditions, limitations and exclusions for each level of cover.
With an NRMA Comprehensive Basics Car Insurance policy, you'll be covered for a range of events. Here’s a summary of what’s included.
Even if someone else drives your car1
Accidents
We cover your car when involved in an accident, plus other cars and property if it's your fault.
Fire, storm & flood
We cover your car if it’s damaged by weather incidents2.
Towing
We pay for towing to a repairer or safe place if your car can’t be driven after an event we cover (like an accident).
Theft & vandalism
We cover your car if it’s stolen, vandalised, or damaged by someone trying to steal it.
Emergency repairs
We pay for repairs you need to make after an event we cover, so your car’s safe to drive (up to $800).
Baby seats
We cover baby capsules and baby seats if they’re stolen or damaged in an accident.
Your accessories are included
If you choose market value, we’ll take the value of your accessories into account at claim time. If you choose agreed value, you’ll need to make sure the value of your accessories is included when we insure your car.
Cover is different for Comprehensive Plus and Comprehensive Basics. Read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS).
There are some things we don’t cover
Roadside assistance
We don’t cover assistance for breakdowns, dead batteries or flat tyres.
Injuries to you or others
Injuries are covered by your Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Insurance.
They’ll give you the details on limits, conditions, exclusions and more
Important note for customers in NSW, QLD, TAS & ACT. If you purchased your policy before 21 April 2024 and you either haven't renewed it yet or you last renewed it before 1 July 2024, your cover will be different to the cover described above. Read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) relevant to your policy on our policy booklets page, or call us on 132 132 for more information.
Agreed value means you choose the amount to insure your car for (from a range we give you). This is automatic on our Comprehensive Plus policy, and optional on our standard Comprehensive policy.
Market value means we’ll work out how much your car is worth at the time you make a claim. To do that, we use things like local market prices, your car’s age, its condition, and any modifications or accessories. This is the only option for our Comprehensive Basics policy.
Take a look at our other Comprehensive Car Insurance policies.
All the inclusions covered in our Comprehensive Basics policy, but with the option to add on extras like $0 excess for glass damage, your choice of repairer, and a hire car after an incident.
Our highest level of comprehensive cover. It’s got all the basics plus optional extras like glass damage and choice of repairer automatically included. It also offers higher value limits for certain areas of cover, like daily car hire limits and taxi fare limits.
You don’t need to list learner drivers on your policy. Instead, we base any excess related to a claim when the vehicle was driven by a learner driver on the excess of the supervising driver. This excess may be higher if the supervising driver is not listed on your policy.
We’ll choose a repairer from one of our Partner Repairers, located all around Australia. If you’re looking for a choice of repairer, upgrade to Comprehensive or Comprehensive Plus and choose the Any repairer option.
No. There is no hire car cover or option with Comprehensive Basics. Hire cars are available with Comprehensive and Comprehensive Plus policies.
Yes – as long as they meet our standard acceptance criteria. We generally cover standard-spec EV, hybrid and PHEV vehicles.
Our Third Party Property Damage Insurance offers a minimum level of protection. It covers damage you cause to someone else's car or property up to $20 million, as well as damage to your car for up to $5,000 when you’re not at fault and the driver of the other vehicle is uninsured.
Comprehensive, on the other hand, covers more than just damage from collisions. It also covers damage caused to your car by other insured events, such as fire, theft, vandalism and bad weather.
