What is Motor Trade Insurance

NRMA Motor Trade Insurance is a type of business insurance designed trades for motor trades businesses like mechanics, auto electricians and motor vehicle detailers (not available in the Northern Territory). Having insurance can help protect the business you’ve worked hard for in case things go wrong.

This could include things like if you accidentally damage a customer’s car during a service. If your customer then makes a claim against you, this could create extra costs for your business and impact your operations and reputation. 

Most motor trades businesses will consider getting Public Liability Insurance (also known as Broadform Liability). This is designed to cover claims of injury or damage to others (including injury caused by your products), as well as certain legal costs in the event of a dispute.

What does Motor Trade Insurance cover?

Cover can provide protection for your vehicles and your customer’s vehicles whilst at and away from the premises.

Business Interruption

Covers the loss of profits after your business suffers damage due to an insured event, such as a fire or storm and the business is closed for the process of rebuilding or repairing the damage. If you are no longer able to trade because of this disaster, you can continue to receive a cash flow to help ensure your business returns to its normal operation.

Electronic Equipment

Covers you for breakdown of electronic equipment such as computers, laptops, printers, vehicle diagnostics or testing equipment.

Machinery

Covers breakdown of cash registers, cool rooms, display fridges or air conditioners

Personal accident and illness

This can provide you with a weekly benefit, if you can’t do your regular work due to a covered injury or illness2.

Burglary

Covers you from an unknown person(s) breaking into your premises, or the premises you are renting, and stealing your business stock, contents or equipment.

Covers breakage to shop front windows, glass shelving or display cabinets, sign writing and advertising signs.

Fraud and Dishonesty

Provides cover for you against loss of money caused by any fraudulent or dishonest act or omission by an Employee with the clear intent of making improper personal financial gain.

General Property

Cover provides you with protection for loss or damage or burglary of property such as tools, when you take them with you on the road or at the work site.

Tax Audit

Provides you cover for the cost of professional fees resulting from an audit or investigation which relates to you paying a tax.

Motor Vehicles

Covers you for business motor vehicles and mobile plant used to operate your business.

What type of insurance might a mechanic consider getting?

Mechanics might consider getting Motor Trade Insurance to cover their businesses in the event of a liability claim.

Our Motor Trade Insurance includes Public Liability cover (also called Broadform Liability), which is designed to cover claims that could arise from a range of different accidents. For example, if you damage a customer’s car while cleaning or repairing it, or a customer is injured by some unattended power tools while visiting your workshop.
